Rain barrel basics

Rain barrels are used for collecting and storing rain water that can be used for watering plants, washing windows, washing the car, etc. This water should not be used for drinking, cooking or for pets.

A rain barrel is typically connected to a house’s gutter via a tube or other attachment that drains directly into the barrel’s top opening. Most rain barrels have an overflow valve which allows you to attach a hose, that way you can decide where the overflow water will end up. You should plan the location of the rain barrel carefully in order to avoid flooding a specific area.

Using the rain barrel

Since rain barrels don’t have water pressure, the water will simply empty out of the barrel when you open the spigot at the bottom of the barrel (if you don’t have a hose attached to it). Before you install your rain barrel make sure your desired container or bucket will fit under the spigot; otherwise, you might have to elevate the barrel using a special rain barrel stand or platform. Elevating the barrel will also help increase the flow of water out of the barrel. (Special booster pumps are available that create water pressure). It’s important to remember to empty out the barrel if freezing temperatures are expected.

Picking a size

Barrels come in a variety of sizes, mainly 50, 65 or 80 gallons, but check with your local ordinances before you install a rain barrel since some cities have size restrictions.
